Jazzercise Lite a hit!
A group of motivated older adults meets four times a week to shake and groove with Jazzercise Lite instructor Michele Catella of Burlington. Catella jumped, shimmied and encouraged a group of 25 women ages 44 to 95 at the Heineberg Senior and Community Center in Burlington.
Catella is an instructor for the Colchester Jazzercise franchise owned by Pamela Fontaine of Williston.
Jazzercise is a cardiovascular workout, strength training and cool-down stretch routine that is always changing and fresh, Fontaine said.
The Jazzercise Lite class is a modified routine for adults looking for a low-impact workout, for adults new to exercising, pregnant women, women who have just had a baby and for those who haven’t exercised in a while and want to get moving again, Fontaine said.
About 50 members participate in Jazzercise Lite classes held four times a week at the center in Burlington.
Elaine Carrano, 82, of Colchester, has a pacemaker and said Jazzercise Lite saved her life.
“I come four times a week because I love it so much. Many of us do,” she said.
Ilse Raymond of Burlington has been attending four times a week for five years. She refused to giver her age, because she is always looking for a boyfriend, she said, as she waited around after class to attend the Tai Chi class held next. She also swam 79 miles in her backyard pool this summer, beating her previous record of 70 miles last summer.
Sue Lewis, 95, of Burlington has completed 1,055 Jazzercise Lite classes at the center and Doris Curtis, 83, of Burlington, attended 1110 classes.
The two have been coming since Fontaine began teaching Jazzercise Lite at the center in 1999.
Curtis said it’s better to come to a class than to sit home and complain and Lewis agreed.“It gives you a kick, gets you going and keeps you going.”

Colchester Jazzercise in BFP
Jazzercise instructor Pamela Fontaine, 44, of Williston was recently honored with the Pacesetter award for being one of the top money-makers in the Jazzercise franchise operation, earning gross revenues of at least $56,000 in 2006. Fontaine, who has been an instructor in the Burlington area for more than nine years, is the owner of the Jazzercise Fitness Center in Colchester and the Jazzercise Lite program for seniors at the Heineberg Senior Center in Burlington. She serves as the local district monitor assistant for Vermont and is in her third year coaching the Williston Central School Dance team. The Free Press caught up with Fontaine to find out more about her favorite fitness routine.
Q: What does Jazzercise entail?
A: Jazzercise is a combination of aerobic and strength/core conditioning movements. The classes last 50 to 60 minutes and are led by certified Jazzercise fitness professionals. Aerobic movement is mixed with dance subtleties to pre-choreographed routines, making the programs unique and easy to follow. Each class will give you an aerobic segment followed by strengthening and stretching for an overall body workout.
Q: What if you’re not a good dancer?
A: You do not have to be a good dancer, and you can certainly show up with your two left feet. The more you come, the more you get used to the movement, the better you will get at it — like riding a bike.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The customers, hands down, and that I get to stay fit and healthy myself. When I fell in love with Jazzercise as a customer, back in 1996, I knew I had to take what the program gave to me as a person and share it with others. Every day, I get to see how this program has changed their lives and how much healthier and stronger they all are. The confidence that this feeling creates is a truly wonderful experience for all of us.

Are we just for women?
NO - we accommodate the female market and our customers are 96% female. We do accommodate the male gender. And let me tell you, these guys work hard, and they have lost weight, toned up and look good. These are guys in the middle ages, working out with their wives, without their wives, and we love to have them there!
Women do not feel intimidated by men in class, as we still rule the population in class.
MEN - this is not a woman only facility. If you think that Jazzercise will not work you out - we challenge you to come in and try for yourself!
Taylor Coppenrath was with us all summer and he brought in TJ Sorrentine for a class. These are professional basketball players. Taylor stated in a recent radio interview "Jazzercise is a very intense workout, one of the best workouts I have been through".
